2000s Bungalow Retrofit

It might seem unusual to think about retrofitting buildings constructed in the 2000s, but the reality is that many of these Celtic Tiger constructions are by inadequate insulation and skyrocketing energy bills. In light of this, we embarked on a significant and extension project with the ambitious goal of achieving an A1 performance rating. Our plan also included making the most of the existing attic space which would provide breathtaking views of James Fort.

This project was not without its challenges, particularly because it was located in the midst of a densely populated housing development. We were understandably concerned potential objections from neighbors regarding issues like overlooking. However, we took the time to prepare a comprehensive design statement that addressed these concerns, which ultimately led to a successful planning with no objections raised.

The timeline the project was affected by the COVID pandemic, but by late 2021, while the family temporarily relocated, we proceeded with the retrofit and extension. The entire process took nine months to complete. We started by demolishing the walls that separated the from the living room on the ground, making way for new steel structures that would create a more open and inviting living space.
